Onyx & Amber 10 Year Rye 140.1 Proof Drums & Drams "Mile High Electrolytes"

This is one crazy rye whiskey. Not only is the proof high, but the flavors take you on a wild ride from start to finish.

The primary driver here is a sweet and effervescent cream soda note, which comes together with an almost lemon-lime characteristic that makes this feel like a cross between a killer rye whiskey, a margarita, and Gatorade. Sounds crazy, but it works together so well, as the combination of fruit, sweetness, and effervescence play together perfectly on the palate. There’s traditional rye spice, but the fruit, sweetness, and age round it out. In the background, there’s a dark, almost smoky barrel char note that supports the entire experience. While it’s certainly intense at 140.1 proof, it doesn’t cross the threshold into feeling overly hot. It’s balanced, not only between proof and flavor, but also with sweet and spice. There’s also a bit of an aged leather note here too, which reminds me of the other barrel we picked that day (called O Tanninbomb), but there’s much less of that in this pour. This is the fruitier, more effervescent barrel, whereas O Tanninbomb is the darker, more leathery one. A great combination and fun side-by-side between the two.
