We’ve given you whiskey finished in used cooperage. We’ve given you whiskey that isn’t finished at all. So for our 4th release, we wanted the barrel experts at Kelvin Cooperage to show off their skills with new cooperate and create something unique and innovative. They delivered. After crafting a series of medium toast casks, then a series of #2 char casks, and finally a third series of #4 char casks, William Hornaday and his team at Kelvin broke all the barrels apart and rebuilt them, alternating between toasted staves and #2 char staves on some barrels, and toasted and #4 char staves on others, they have created the first ever “Split Stave™” barrels. To fill them, we blended a 5.5 Year Old Kentucky Straight Bourbon and a 12 Year Old Kentucky Straight Bourbon and let them rest in our Split Stave barrels for five months. Four Gate Ruby Rye Springs Batch 11

$169.99

Four Gate Whiskey Co. Batch #11, Ruby Rye Springs is a 7 year rye whiskey finished in port wine casks. The journey begins with the 7 year 95% Indiana rye whiskey the brand used in both their River Kelvin Rye and Split Stave Rye releases. For this expression, Four Gate finished the whiskey for 42 days in Ruby Port-Rum casks. The casks were first used to mature ruby port, a sweet, bright fortified wine from Portugal, then sent to Virago Spirits in Richmond, VA where the barrels were used to finish a blend of rums for a rich molasses sweetness. Tasting notes from the distillery describe “fruit cake, tart gum drops, lemon and orange zest, and spicy rye” on the nose, with “a sweet tart red berry note.. with a spicy black pepper flowing down the center palate. Raspberries and blueberries surround the periphery with a hint of citrus rounding out the taste.” On the finish, we’re told to expect “black pepper and sweet red fruits [to] dominate the start, with sweet molasses rounding out the viscous mouthfeel.”
