Shortbarrel Small Batch Rye 101

$59.99

Basketball, Racing, and Rye Whiskey, just a few of the things for which Indiana is known. When we started researching ryes for our first Shortbarrel expression, we knew where to look first. Although non-age stated, release #3 is a blend of non chill filtered MGP rye barrels, all over 5 years old and blended to our specifications. We feel that 101 is the perfect proof to hold up to cocktails, sip neat, or enjoy on the rocks. The spice blends with a subtle sweetness to dance this blend across all of your taste buds.

Tasting Notes

Mouth: Caramel, vanilla, slight mint, surprisingly sweet while holding onto the signature Shortbarrel bold, lingering spice that has become our trademark.

Aroma: Rye spice hits you quickly and then fades into lightly floral notes. Slight notes of baking spices, pepper, nutmeg, cinnamon, and mint candy in the background.

Finish: Despite a lower proof for some. The long, spice finish remained. It consisted of clove, rye spice, almond, oak, and tobacco leaf.

I'm relatively new to the bourbon/rye world. That being said, I don't pick out the different notes like some do. What I do know is that this is delicious!! Picked it up from my local store in Thomasville, GA and popped it last night. So good. I think the proof is great at 101. Doesn't taste thin at all. The rye spice is not overpowering, but present. I feel like this is a great option for someone wanting to dip their toe in rye whiskey.

I'm a big fan of rye and when my buddy asked me to find this bottle for him I was pleasantly surprised how easy it was to grab, so naturally I got one for myself as well. We opened this on rye night tasting against some heavy hitters: Rendezvous, Michters 10, Willett 4 year, and Lock Stock and Barrel 16. Essentially this was the lowest price in the bunch but nearly everyone put it 2nd, just under the nearly 200 dollar Lock Stock. Proof wise it was in the middle of the pack and it has a great depth of flavor despite the slightly lower proof. We found the flavor profile very similar to what Shortbarrel claims... baking spices, light hints of mint and of course that peppery rye note. A very solid offering that competes against bottles over twice it's price point!

It’s hard to try something out of the norm but take my word for it folks you got give this a try it’s unreal!!
