American Spirit: Wild Turkey Bourbon from Ripy to Russell

American Spirit: Wild Turkey Bourbon from Ripy to Russell

by David Jennings The story of Wild Turkey is in many ways the story of bourbon itself. From the struggles of nineteenth-century immigrants, to the triumphs of the longest-tenured master distiller in the world, a bold, uniquely American spirit emerges. American Spirit: Wild Turkey Bourbon from Ripy to Russell is a tribute to the perseverance of two families, each perfecting their passion through extraordinary circumstances. It’s a testament to Jimmy Russell and his sixty-five years of unmatched dedication to quality. And much like a glass of fine bourbon, it’s a journey – a personal reflection on something carefully crafted over time. This book is a love letter to Wild Turkey that all bourbon enthusiasts can raise a glass to and enjoy. Paperback

This is an absolutely wonderful book! I highly recommend it to any bourbon fan, and especially Wild Turkey enthusiasts. David Jennings' (aka Rarebird101) writing is fantastic and engaging. And the photography included throughout the book is beautiful. He first details the history of the brand in all of its incarnations and the major players over the years. In my opinion he hits a nice balance of historic detail. It could be easy for a writer to get bogged down with too many dry facts and dates, or to skim over too much and leave it feeling short. But David strikes a great balance here, and the history of Wild Turkey remains engaging all the way through the very last page of this section. Then he walks you through all of the current expressions and many from the past with information about each one, as well as his opinions. All in all, this book is fantastic! If you're into learning more about the history of bourbon and Wild Turkey, it's a must buy. This would also make a great gift for any bourbon lovers in your life.

Extremely thorough work by David Jennings. Such a great book not just for the Wild Turkey fan but for anyone who loves and appreciates bourbon.

If you want to either expand your turkey knowledge or just learn some history on bourbon this is a fantastic read!!

A quick, fun read that will make you want to pack a suitcase and head to Lawrenceburg, KY to visit the Russells and the Wild Turkey distillery. David has written the definitive history of Wild Turkey, but balances it with a conversational writing style that is instantly accessible. His passion shines through on every page. In addition to the story of Wild Turkey and the Russells, the book also contains cocktail recipes and tasting notes for many Wild Turkey expressions, both modern and vintage. A nice touch and something that can be referenced when tasting at home. David is arguably the biggest Wild Turkey superfan around, and this book is as much detailed history as it is a love letter to his favorite distillery. Highly recommended!
