All of our releases, no matter the barrel finish we choose, must start with excellent whiskey. That’s our #1 rule, and we won’t compromise. It’s the Foundation of what we do.
It just so happened that we located and purchased some Kentucky Straight Bourbon ranging from 9 years, 9 months old to over 11 years that was so good when we tasted it with Kelvin Cooperage, that we all agreed we couldn’t make it better by barrel finishing it.
So we’re presenting a very small batch of this wonderful whiskey to you in all its unfiltered, barrel proof glory. That’s right, Straight Kentucky Bourbon, no finish at all.
The only downside is that we didn’t get a whole lot of this whiskey, so this micro-batch is extremely limited in size, with only 748 bottles produced. And since great bourbon forms the foundation of our product, we named it just that: FOUNDATION.
One of the smallest Four Gate releases to date, FOUR BY FOUR is a blend of barrels of 9-Year Old Straight Bourbon Whiskey from Dearborn County, Indiana finished in Barbadian Dark Rum Casks. Not only is it a small release, but the resulting barrel proof is one of the lowest Four Gate Whiskey Company has released at 103.2.
Nose: The finish barrels are front and center with a huge waft of maple syrup. Behind that, there is a spicy cinnamon, some vanilla and caramel, with a sweet red fruit undertone. Taste: Oloroso Sherry hits the front palate with a burst of sweet fortified wine and simple syrup. The mid palate gets traditional high-rye bourbon notes of vanilla, black pepper, and oak, while the rear palate gets a molasses and brown sugar sweetness from the rum finish. Finish: Medium-to-long, there are prevalent barrel tannins and rye spices that linger on the tongue while a boozy rum finish coats the inside of the mouth.
This 10 year, 21% rye Indiana bourbon is one we've been waiting for! Four Gate Whiskey Company has announced its latest release of barrel Finished craft American whiskey: "Saint Charente."
Saint Charente is a 7 Year Kentucky Straight Bourbon finished in cognac casks.
Cognac is a varietal of Brandy produced in and around the region of France known as Cognac. It is made from distilled grapes, usually white, and aged in French Oak casks much in the same way whiskey is aged.
The underlying bourbon was distilled and aged in Kentucky from a mash bill of 75% Corn, 21% Rye, and 4% malted Barley.
I absolutely love the nose on this batch," said Chief Blending Officer, Bill Straub. "It has tons of orchard fruits from those cognac casks and the French oak gave it some great baking spice notes as well. It's like apple pie.'
The Batch is named for the River Charente that flows through the Cognac region of France.
"All the little towns in that area are called 'Saint' this or that," said Chief Barrel Officer, Bob D'Antoni. "We added the Saint in front of Charente in homage of that."
